28. A Prelude to Threat. Shadow of the Wolf Draws Near!
Kenshin’s been having nightmares about his past as the ‘Hitokiri Battousai’ and wonders if his dreams are a sign of things to come. He tries to put his worries aside for the time being as he and the rest of the Kenshin-gumi ( minus Sano ) go out for lunch at the Akabeko. While they’re out Sano arrives at the dojo hoping for a free meal but is disappointed when he sees that nobody is home. Just then another man arrives at the dojo claiming to sell medicine, but Sano isn’t fooled by the disguise. The man turns out to be a swordsman looking for “the Battousai”. Sano tries to fight him but the man is much too strong. He seriously injures Sano without breaking a sweat and then leaves. Later, the rest of the Kenshin-gumi arrive back at the dojo to find Sano unconscious and barely alive. They work frantically to save his life and are able to bring him to a stable condition. Kenshin is able to deduce from the nature of Sano’s wound and from the fake medicine box left behind that man responsible is none other than Hajime Saitou, former captain of the 3rd squad of the Shinsen-gumi, and Kenshin’s rival from long ago. The two had fought on opposite sides during the Meiji Restoration and Kenshin had never been able to defeat him even at the peak of his strength as the ‘Hitokiri Battousai’. And now Saitou is back, having been hired by a greedy politician to kill Kenshin, the same politician who was actually controlling Jineh Udoh ( from ep. 6 and 7 ). Saitou has also taken a second job as a policeman patrolling around Tokyo. Kenshin wonders to himself whether he will be able to fend Saitou off while still maintaining his vow to never kill again…

29. The Ultimate Rival. [Saitou vs. Kenshin fight]
Things are somber at the Kamiya Dojo as Megumi continues tending to an unconscious Sanosuke. Elsewhere, Akamatsu, another assassin working for the same politician as Saitou voices his annoyance over the fact that Saitou will be the one fighting Kenshin. Saitou decides to indulge him by saying that he’ll let Akamatsu fight Kenshin in his place. He then writes a letter telling Kenshin to meet him. Akamatsu uses this letter to lure Kenshin out of the dojo and into a fight. While Kenshin is away, Saitou uses his position as a policeman to trick Kaoru and Yahiko into letting him into the dojo. After having some trouble, Kenshin eventually defeats Akamatsu. He returns to the dojo and finds Saitou waiting there for him. The two exchange harsh words. Saitou tells Kenshin that he is a failure as a peaceful wanderer. Despite Kaoru’s best efforts to intervene, the two begin to fight. Saitou appears to achieve a quick victory when he stabs Kenshin in the stomach…

30. Evil Has It's Revenge. Shishio Makoto's Devilish Plot. [Saitou vs. Kenshin fight]
Kenshin manages to stay alive despite the deep wound in his stomach. He continues to fight Saitou and as time goes by he becomes more and more angry. He eventually becomes mad enough that he turns back into the ruthless Hitokiri that he was during the revolution. Kaoru, who is watching the fight with Yahiko, Megumi, and Sano ( who has regained consciousness ) starts sobbing because she is worried that Kenshin will break his vow never to kill. Kenshin and Saitou do in fact come very close to killing each other when their fight is interrupted by the arrival of Secretary General Toshimichi Okubo flanked by the police commissioner. It is revealed the Saitou has been secretly working for Okubo all along and that it was his job to test Kenshin's strength. Kenshin and Saitou discontinue their fight, Saitou leaves, and Kenshin returns to normal. Okubo announces that he wants Kenshin to return to Kyoto to assassinate a man named Makoto Shishio. Shishio was Kenshin's successor back during the revolution and now he is out to rule Japan after being betrayed and nearly burned to death by the men he worked for. None of the Kenshin-gumi want Kenshin to go. Meanwhile, Akamatsu ( who was spying on Saitou at the dojo ) rushes off to tell the politician that Saitou was only pretending to work for him but their conversation is interrupted when Saitou appears and kills them both. Back at the dojo, Okubo says he'll give Kenshin a week to think over his request. He then leaves, never to be seen alive by the Kenshin-gumi again...

31. Can't Get Close... Kenshin's Journey!
A week has gone by since the incident with Saitou and Okubo and everyone is anxious to know if Kenshin will decide to go to Kyoto (except of Sano who has overslept) While they are out with Dr. Gensai, Ayame and Suzume, Kaoru tries to make Kenshin inadvertently promise not to go to Kyoto by saying that he’ll see the summer fireflies with them that night. Yahiko, Megumi, and Sano (having been woken up by the other two) then arrive. Sano warns Kenshin that Okubo is just another corrupt politician but Kenshin says that if that were so than Saitou would have killed him already. Everyone tries to convince Kenshin to stay in Tokyo and Megumi even puts a collar on him to keep him from leaving but he remains undecided. Kenshin then decides to leave to give Okubo his answer. Elsewhere, Okubo is riding in his carriage and wondering if Kenshin will accept his offer. At that moment, a mysterious young man breaks into his carriage and assassinates him. Not long after, Kenshin happens upon the scene of the murder which has attracted a small crowd along with the police. Okubo’s murderer who is hidden in the crowd tells Kenshin not to get involved before disappearing. News of Okubo’s death spreads quickly through Japan, a small group of disgruntled samurai having falsely claimed responsibility for it. Kenshin encounters Saitou once again, who tells him that he will be going to Kyoto. Kenshin is left to brood over the hitokiri within him. Later during the night Kaoru goes out on her own to see the fireflies since Yahiko has gone to bed and everyone else is busy helping Dr. Gensai with a medical emergency. Kenshin soon appears and tells her that he will be going to Kyoto and thanks her for everything. He embraces her as he says goodbye and then leaves. Kaoru has become so overcome with grief that she falls to the ground in tears as he walks away and becomes a wanderer once again.
